In early 90’s, cleaning kitchen utensils in LA prison, our very talented Robert Downey Jr earned seven cents per hour. He was battling with the drug and alcohol addiction and his survival over these is quite inspirational.
He often landed in and out of the prison because of his drug-addict offense. Downey’s life kept rotating in parlous fame and he entered his first rehab in 1988. Yet, his demons kept crawling him and he did not had any control over his debauch. After repetitive encounters with judge and imprisonments, he finally achieved his sobriety in 2002.
Now, after almost two decades, he is one of the highest paid actor in the world.
Before hitting the highest spot, Downey was killing his own dreams by being a burnout due to his narcotics addiction.
From 1993-95, he started witnessing his stardom with all the fame and money that comes to a superstar. He was signed by the greatest directors of that time and was praised everywhere for every characters played by him.
In 1993, He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for the movie Chaplin.
After his parents divorced, he started to live lived with his father, with whom he had his first snort at the early age of six years. His father was a drug-addict and an underground film maker.
According to Downey, he started taking drugs with his father as an emotional bonding experience. He recalls that he was soon getting drunk every night and ‘making a thousand phone calls in pursuit of drugs’.
Between 1996 and 2001, his life had became a haze of headline-generating mistakes and their consequences. Cocaine, heroine and everything that you can think of had converted this actor into a dope-head. His career was in great turmoil. His love for drugs made him suffer from bipolar disorder and also made him regret few of the career defining roles.
In 1999, During a court hearing, Downey quoted “It’s like I’ve got a shotgun in my mouth with my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gun metal.”
At various occasions, he also blamed his dad for his addiction.
After 5 years of addiction, he got his senses back from multiple visit to rehabs and jails. While signing him, most of the directors started to keep as much as 40 per cent of his pay as insurance against addictive behavior, but Downy didn’t give up. He struggled for his roles and proved his acting talent again and again.
Since then his life has significantly turned around and then came the year 2008 which gave his name the synonym of ‘Iron-man’. In the same year he became a part of Marvel Studio’s Iron Man trilogy and other marvel movies with other mega-hit of Sherlock Holmes.
Downey never left hope and established himself as one of the finest actor Hollywood industry has. With a hat-trick of successful movies, he has been crowned as the highest paid actor.
Downey’s life is truly a source of inspiration for all.
